Free Practice

Entries took to the track for free practice... Our faithful photographer hitched a ride on the track maintenance van to capture these moments...

oooh this was close!

...and a little more gentlemanly...
...into the sweeping first corner...
...this corner is a debris minefield...
...nice and easy out of the hairpin...
...checking up to make sure they all make it through...
...yes! that-a-way!...
...slowing for the squeeze and bunching up as is usual...
...these two would test one another's nerves...
...everyone safely done in free practice...

Qualifying

The field awaits word from the race director...

...qualifying order by random draw...

...every qualifier to have 90 seconds on track...

...fastest lap determines place in race rotation...

...front and mid engine cars will all qualify in one group...

First up to take the green flag in qualifying was the #9 Ferrari... it clocked in at 8.240 sec. and took provisional pole...
Next up the #104 Mercedes roared around the Ring...

...and managed a blistering 7.636 sec...

...a speedy fast new pole sitter with German muscle...
The lovely Ninco #3 Shaguar completed a best lap of just 8.333 seconds to fall to the back of the field...
This Ferrari 250 GTO showed promise but couldn't break 8 seconds... best lap was 8.017 to squeeze in ahead of #9...
Then an American Cheetah flew by and began to near the pole sitting time...

... but came up just short to clock 7.687 seconds...

...and take second place for the time being.

Up next another sleek Ferrari 250 GTO...

Getting faster this red Italian stallion managed a time of 7.611 seconds to capture provisional pole...

...and after the first six qualifiers the field so far was spread by just over 7/10ths of a second with Italian, German and American entries leading the early field...
Time now for our first green  entry... this Aston Martin DB5 took to the track and turned several heads clocking in at 7.842 seconds to slot into the middle of the early pack...
Then a Ferrari 275 sped away looking very fast indeed... but after 90 seconds it could only manage a best lap of 8.264 seconds which put it near the back of the pack for now...
...and so after the first 8 qualifiers the grid looked as follows...
Another Ferrari, this time the Stirling green entry #111 blasted down the front stretch...

...screetching through the corners, sometimes locking one or two wheels, the pilot was fast but fell just short with a lap of 7.671 seconds to take third spot so far...

...the returning Ninco silver and green Jaguar E Type #92 was then on track...

...it looked plenty fast but the stop watch said it could only manage an 8.589... which set it at the back of the pack...

...another Ferrari, this time a bright yellow 250LM caught the attention of many fans...

...as it hurled around the donut warming up...

...and after several close lap times came to a best of 7.932 seconds to place it mid-pack.

A rare Hussein Dodge began its qualifying runs...

...gradually building up speed with every lap...

...to edge #26 with a lap of 7.900 seconds and taking 6th place for the moment...

...more American muscle now... a Shelby Cobra Coupe rumbled on past...

...powering out of every corner and pushing deeper and deeper into every apex...

...building up speed it gave a best time of 7.897 seconds to just pip the Hussein for 6th...

...another Ferrari 250 GTO #12, this one in white with Italian stripes, roared past someone else's mess - thank goodness it was just warming up...

...its last qualifying lap was its best one - an 8.330 - to nudge #3 out of 12th position...

...coincidence had fellow team mate #13 run immediately afterwards...

...and on its last qualifying lap it split the field with a respectable 7.919 lap...

An off white Shaguar XK120 tore off - smoke billowing from the exhaust...

...the pilot leaned into every corner and braced himself for every bump...

...willing as much as he did his best was a lap of 8.308 seconds to place him 13th for the time being...

...and so the field began to take shape...

...and the top two remained the same...

...with seven more entries to come...

...another lovely Mercedes 300 SLR sped away on track...

...would German power regain the pole?

...this beast managed a best of 8.481 seconds leaving the crew wondering what else they could have done... and narrowly avoiding the back of the grid...

...more American muscle - this time the iconic Corvette #6...

...it took several laps to get up to speed and a fastest of 8.104 seconds was enough for 11th place...

...another scarlet car, this one a lovely Lancia D24 took to the track...

...it chased the Corvette's time but couldn't beat it...

...landing with an 8.199 for 12th position...

...another scarlet car - this one a Maserati 300S... blasted on by the pits...

...lap after lap it ran consistent low 8 second laps... the best being 8.011to just clip the #24 Ferrari by 6/1000 of a second for a spot in the top ten (for now)...

Another Ferrari 250LM followed...

...it started off slowly but peaked on the 7th lap with a fastest lap of 8.317 seconds - placing it near the back...

This Ferrari 860 Monza was hard to start but once it got going boy did it go!

Speeds approached those of the pole sitters...

...until...

...the 7th lap when it ran a sub 7.6 to take the provision pole with just one entry to go!

The paddock went berserk!!!

...and while the crowd were still screaming another Ferrari, this one a silver 275 GTB, blasted by - you could hardly hear it over the crowd noise...

...after a few laps it settled into the low 8s...

...and it became clear that pole was out of reach...

...8.044 seconds was all...

...and so you had your 2016 IPS Grid!

...with less than a 1/10th separating the top 5 qualifiers...

...Ferrari on pole and taking the top two positions in qualifying... Enzo would be proud!

The upcoming race is shaping up to be an exciting one - stay tuned!

The weather forecast and track conditions were set to be perfect...

Race Day

It was another early morning for the teams, their drivers, track workers and those supporting the race, not to mention the throngs of spectators that came, some from as far away as Hawaii, to see the spectacle of well traveled sports cars in this edition of the International Proxy Series. All sorts of chassis would be showcased - perhaps more than ever before...

As the morning fog began to burn away track vendors were busy brewing coffee and stocking shelves with fresh Schwarzbrot. Marshals continued to ready the course... hopefully they had all seen the last of the Trumpfen virus...

Shortly after 10,00 the control tower signaled that it was finally yodel time - Oesch's Die Dritten yodeled their gold record hit "Swiss Girl"... followed by a little cowbell SNL style... and finally recording legend Heino belted out a stirring rendition of 'Rosamunde'...

The crowds were entertained as director Fritz Stroebl summoned three qualified R32 racers and ordered them stationed at each lane for the duration of the race. The rest would marshal at various points around the 72'+ track. Heats were 3 minutes in each lane for a combined total of 9 minutes of racing. For closer racing the field was divided into 6 groups based on qualifying result (with the slowest group kicking off the race) and overall results combined thereafter.

The first group of four qualifiers were ordered on track to take the green flag. It was finally time to see if any of these three drivers could find more time in these cars.

Group 1 consisting of 4 entries #92, 266, 3 and 12 would take the green flag for the start of the race.
#12 jumped to an early lead after just a few laps and the order would remain unchanged for the first heat/segment.
Over the duration of heat 2 the #3 Jaguar would trade fastest laps with the #12 Ferrari, almost holding station with its rival...
In heat 3 the #92 Jaguar E Type turned in a steady performance in the yellow lane but didn't gain track position...

...#12 was first to finish with a total of 60.590 laps...

Would anyone be able to catch the flying white Ferrari? The rest of the field did try in the final heat of group 1 but none succeeded... In a spirited drive #92 made up track position to win the final heat and bump the 300 SLR to 4th but it just wasn't enough to catch the red Jaguar for 2nd place... perhaps if the final heat was another minute longer...

...a few front motored entries would lead the first heat as the group began to separate after the first few laps...

The #8 Ferrari LM took the green flag in the second heat and while slightly faster than the other red Ferrari it was not able to make up track position...
...by the third heat #9 showed its overall dominance of the group and finished the race with 61.885 laps to take the early overall race lead.

...#7 and 22 were tied in overall laps and their duel would be settled in the final heat for the group...

In some very close racing in the final heat #7 managed to edge #22 by half a lap to take second place overall, but it wasn't enough to catch #9 who remained first overall...

Group 3 began with the roar of the Corvette which bolted into the lead and didn't look back for the first heat. The Ferraris would scrap early on but eventually the field would separate and everyone settled into their respective grooves...
#58 jumped into the gunfight in the second heat but began to drop back as the laps counted on...

...#24 would hang on to the group lead after two heats...

...while #15 began to warm up and gain back lost time...

#24 threw down the gauntlet in heat three to take the early overall race lead with 63.225 laps...

The corvette returned and continued to lap quickly to reclaim second place in the group,  ahead of the silver Ferrari who was pitside.

Into the final stanza they went - the silver Ferrari slowly reeled in the Corvette winning the final heat but not able to make up enough ground in the race... all three cars completed more than 21 laps making it the furthest traveled heat of the race... and the Corvette managed to squeeze into second overall just behind #24...

Group 4 began with more Ferraris and a rare Hussein... the gutter lanes would have a close duel in this heat with the bright yellow Ferrari LM bettering the blue and white Hussein ever so slightly by the end of the heat...
The Maserati 300S joined in on the second heat and managed to keep pace with the white Ferrari (who won the heat) but could not make up much track position... the Hussein, despite finishing second in the heat, maintained the group lead...

In opposite lanes the Hussein and the Ferrari LM again resumed their battle... and this time the Hussein would retain the group and move into the overall race lead with 65.085 laps...
The final heat of the group was the fastest combined heat of the race so far... with a total of more than 67 laps completed...

...The Maserati found a groove in lane 3 to win the final heat with 23 laps, finishing just inches ahead of the Hussein.

...but the bright yellow Ferrari with earlier track position would hang on to win the group and take the overall lead despite finishing third in the final heat...

...The white Ferrari 250 GTO ran a heat high of more than 22 laps but could not move further up than 4th overall...

Group 5 had some American muscle, British elegance and Ferrari magic...

...the Cheetah jumped ahead of the pack down the front straight but halfway through the lap the stirling green Ferrari moved in front and never looked back... and the field spread out as the DB5 began to drop away...

...all three finished with 22 laps, likely the most in any first heat of the race...

...with the Ferrari having track position over both the Cheetah and the DB5...
For heat 2 the Shelby Cobra joined the track... while turning a respectable plus 21 laps it couldn't catch the Ferrari nor Cheetah - both of whom completed 23 laps each, but this time with the Cheetah having passed the Ferrari to resume the lead of the group...
The third heat saw the return of the DB5 from the pits... but it was no match for the Ferrari who again won its second of three heats...

The Cobra ran well again with 21 laps but that wasn't enough to challenge for the group lead...

The Ferrari finished with a combined 68.130 laps to take the group and overall race lead.

Then came the fourth heat of group 5.

The Cheetah returned to the track and the remaining cars all ran their final heat of the race.

While the Cobra again ran a solid 21 laps it fell further behind the DB5 and the Cheetah.

But it was all Cheetah in the final heat, also winning two out of three heats in the group to move into both the group and overall race lead with a total of 68.795 laps, half a lap ahead of the Ferrari who now sat second overall with 68.130 laps.

Three cars remained and would race in the final group. Again, a couple of Ferraris and some German engineering. Anticipation was high to see which one of these cars would win their group and the race.

The first heat saw the Ferrari 860 Monza take the group lead with 23 laps, followed by the silver arrow just nipping the Ferrari 250 GTO for second...

The second heat saw some great racing and some passing and a change in the group order... now with the Mercedes going on to win the heat with 23 laps and take the group lead...

...the Ferrari GTO moved into second place just ahead of the 860 Monza...
The final and third heat of the group and the race would again change the order... with the Ferrari GTO doing a record breaking 24 laps to win the heat, followed by the Monza with 23 laps and the silver arrow with 21...

Despite a spectacular drive the Ferrari GTO would remain half a lap behind the overall race winner - the Cheetah #36 - and both the Monza and Silver Arrows would fall out of the top three...

A Few Comments:

Drivers commented on how well all of the cars handled. The fact that the cars were all very forgiving to race contributed heavily to there being no offs in any of the heats, a remarkable and unusual record. It didn't hurt that Herr Stroebl ordered every racer not to exceed the limits of any car... he insisted that should they survive ANY mishap punishment would be swift... it was no coincidence that the firing squad were on standby nearby...

This group of IPS cars is the best lot yet. Over the past several years I've seen a dramatic improvement in overall quality. Cheers to everyone who entered a car (or two)!

The Ring prefers gearing in the 10x24 range for all of the slow motors. For heavier full bodied cars (such as the IPS cars) the S-can motor has a slight advantage due to its torque (the FF050 slow motors are great in the lighter open wheel cars but when overall weight approaches anything over 65 grams they will be at a disadvantage).

The three racers who were selected each raced all of the cars in their assigned lane only. Yours truly was in green. Michael, a relatively new racer, but one who is careful never to overdrive a car, was in yellow. Bill, a seasoned slot car racer in just about every scale and vintage manned the red lane. Together we enjoyed spirited but gentlemanly racing in this IPS round. There were no eventful issues with any of the cars. They are all leaving with the same road rash scars that they arrived with.

Some motors and tires (or lubricants) needed more time to 'warm up' and usually the best laps in each three minute heat not surprisingly came near the end. This may explain differences for some cars between their qualifying times and race times.

All three lanes at The Ring are within a quarter of an inch of one another in length. With 6" gutters and an equal number of left/right corners there is no distinct advantage either gutter lane (or the middle lane) has over the other. Depending on the motor's torque, gearing, braking, grip and overall handling some cars typically prefer one lane over another, but the 'preferred lane' usually varies among any class at The Ring.

The printouts used for each 'group' are created directly from my timing software 'SlotTrak'. 'Race Place' is determined by order the cars last crossed the start/finish line before time expired. It is not until a car completes its third 'heat' (or segment) that the partial lap is added manually to determine exact track position... [Our group doesn't race this way for a variety of reasons - but we prefer the 'race to line' method wherein everyone on track simply finishes the lap they are on when time expires and the time it takes to finish that lap is tabulated and used as a tie breaker whenever laps are tied thereby letting the computer do all of the work to determine finishing order.]

I want to thank everyone from R32 who was able to help with the proxy, including the drivers and marshals.

The last item to comment on are the Concours d'Elegance entrants. After the race we all debated the pros and cons of each car, and, without taking into account actual road rash, agreed that we would rank the cars as follows (from best to the rest):

104, 17, 15, 9, 111, 8, 68, 58, 56, 13, 11, 12...

Thanks to everyone who participated and especially to those that helped organize the IPS, including Alexis. I am forwarding prizes too. Cheers!
